The Tournament Players Club at Deere Run is an Illinois favorite

The PGA TOUR has been proud to make Illinois home to many of the most historic golf tournaments in the world and looks forward to a busy 2003 in the Land of Lincoln. PGA TOUR tournaments have been held here since 1899 when Willie Smith won the first Western Open at Glen View Golf Club in Chicago.

The summer will be full of tournament golf with the playing of three tournaments in four weeks from early June to early July, beginning with the Nationwide Tour’s LaSalle Bank Open, continuing with the U.S. Open the next week and concluding with the Western Open three weeks later. The PGA TOUR’s John Deere Classic will be played in the fall. The Nationwide Tour, playing for the second time in Chicago, has developed into one of the most competitive professional Tours in the world and has reached a level where it is a virtual extension of the PGA TOUR, with more than 120 PGA TOUR victories coming from Nationwide Tour graduates. The LaSalle Bank Open will be played June 2-8 at The Glen Club in Chicago. The U.S. Open has been played in Illinois 12 times in its history, but this will be the first trip back to Olympia Fields since Johnny Farrell defeated Bobby Jones in a 36-hole playoff to win the 1928 U.S. Open. Tiger Woods is the defending champion for the June 9-15 tournament. This year marks the 100th Western Open, and for the 13th consecutive time the event will be played at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont, IL June 30-July 6. Jerry Kelly defends at the third-oldest event on the PGA TOUR, which moved throughout the Midwest and West in its early years, but has called Illinois its continuous home base since 1961. The John Deere Classic returns to the Tournament Players Club at Deere Run for the fourth time. J.P. Hayes defends his title Sept. 8-14.

We hope that The PGA TOUR Guide to Golf, an officially licensed publication of the PGA TOUR, will be a thorough guide to this area, whether you’re vacationing, attending one of our outstanding tournaments or simply enjoying a casual round.
